During the opening of the Hannover Messe by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Managing Partner of SCHUNK GmbH & Co. KG, Henrik A. Schunk received the award from Federal Minister for Education, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka. The world’s first intelligent gripping module for human/robot collaboration, SCHUNK Co-act Gripper JL1 received the award.

The Hermes Award, one of the world’s most coveted technology prizes, goes to SCHUNK, the competence leader for gripping systems and clamping technology from Lauffen, Germany. During the opening of the Hannover Messe by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Managing Partner of SCHUNK GmbH & Co. KG, Henrik A. Schunk received the award from Federal Minister for Education, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka. The NEW SCHUNK technology carrier for collaborative gripping


Safe gripping now has a name. With the NEW SCHUNK Co-act Gripper JL1 technology carrier, SCHUNK sets the course for the first intelligent HRC gripper on the market, which directly interacts with humans. By using various sensor systems, adaptions to the gripper process are possible in real time. Conditions of situations, environments and application can be practically received, evaluated and communicated through several “senses”.

SCHUNK Co-act grippers will be able to submit all the relevant process and environmental data to the control and production systems in future. Thereby, the focus is on process optimization, the intelligent material flow and the permanent documentation. The intuitive interaction between the gripper and operator complements the system.

Germany’s Chancellor visits SCHUNK, the winner of the Hermes Award 2017

SCHUNK, the competence leader for gripping systems and clamping technology of Lauffen, Germany started off the Hannover Messe with a brilliant success: At the opening of the world’s leading trade show by Germany’s Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka presented the innovative family-owned company with the Hermes Award 2017, one of the world’s most prestigious technology prizes. On her tour of the exhibition on Monday, Chancellor Merkel visited the SCHUNK booth, and looked on while the Managing Partner/CEO of the family-owned company, Henrik A. Schunk, presented smart gripping modules that enable direct human/robot collaboration (HRC). With its HRC grippers of the SCHUNK Co-act series the Swabian technology forge has made an important contribution to production systems of the future.

Digital Twin – What does this mean?

A Digital Twin is the digital form of a real object. Based on a CAD three-dimensional model, it has all the product properties, functions, and process parameters – from the material, the sensor system, up to the motion and dynamics available. As an intelligent three-dimensional model, the Digital Twin allows a realistic simulation in a computer-aided simulation environment. All the aspects of operation and the processes can be executed in real time. This allows programming of the process, its optimization
and the testing of extreme situations before the availability of individual components and modules.

In short: Already during the planing phase a digital commissioning is possible.
